Canford Cliffs (The Transfiguration)

Canford Cliffs Church

Church of the Transfiguration, Canford Cliffs, Dorset

Described by Pevsner as "a bungaloid church of 1962-5 by Lionel E. Gregory, the exact ecclesiastical equivalent of Dunromin and Thistledo, with crazy-paved walling and saw-toothed dormers." A mission church was originally built on this site in 1911. Pitfield says that it "was of pebbledash rendered timber framing on a brick plinth and roofed by corrugated iron." After Canford Cliffs and Sandford were made a separate parocial district in 1945, fund raising started for the new church. Parts of the old timber framing from the old church was retained and incorporated into the new church.
